During the 5-day Birding Valencia Alicante tour we will visit the best birding place of East Spain. Some of our targets, include top raptors such as Golden Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle and Griffon Vulture. We will combine all king of habitats, visiting marshland to find Red-knobbed Coot, White-headed Duck, Purple swamp-hen, Bluethroath and Moustached Warbler, forest which hold Crested Tit and Rock Bunting and steppes where Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew and both species of Bustards can be found.
Depending of the season, our experienced guides with wide knowledge of the region will help to find the most difficult birds such as Trumpet Finch, Olivaceus Warbler, Rufous-tailed Scrub-robin, Montagu’s Harrier, Eagle Owl, etc. Furthermore, you will be located in Oliva in a rural hotel surrounded by the marshes.
Welcome to Valencia airport before we head to the Albufera Natural Park. We will stop 25 minutes later in order to see one of the reserves of this significant site designated as a Zone of Special Protection for Birds as well as an important Ramsar wetland.
After we have a picnic in the visitor center, we will go around the 14.000 ha of rice fields where species such as Squacco Heron, Great-white Egret, Purple Heron, Night Heron, Great Reed Warbler, Savi’s Warbler and Black-winged Stilt can be seen. It is also a great place to see the breeding colonies of Audouin’s and Mediterranean Gull, Common and Little Tern and Collared Pratincole. We also expect to see a good number of migrant waders (Plovers, Dunlins, Stints, Sandpipers, etc) and raptors such as Booted and Short-toed Eagle. In the evening we will check-in our hotel in Oliva. After dinner, we will set off to look for owls (Barn, Scoops and Eagle) and Red-necked nightjars (optional).

Today, we will be birding in the Albacete province, but before we reach it, we will stop in a local area where Spectacled Warbler have been breeding during the last years. Once we reach the Albacete province, we will stop in the lagoons scattered among the steppes to see species such as: Black-necked Grebe, Kentish Plover, Whiskered Tern, Marsh Harrier, White-headed Duck, and a good number of migrants. Then, we will drive around the well-preserved farmland areas where we should see Great and Little Bustard, Stone Curlew, Calandra Lark, Thekla Lark, Short-toed Lark and Corn Bunting. In this area Pin-Tailed and Black-bellied Sandgrouse are also seen. In the evening we will set off to our hotel in Oliva.
We will head to Pego Marshes to see how local conservationist ring passerines in order to study them. It will be a perfect opportunity to see the small and sometimes elusive Moustached and Savi’s Warbler. Then, we will make a short stop to see Olivaceus Warbler. After lunch we will set off to the Alicante mountains to look for Orphean Warbler, Golden Oriole, Golden Eagle, Red-billed Chough, Bonelli’s Warbler, Crossbills, Firecrest and Crested Tit. Night in Gandia Beach.
After breakfast we will head to the mountains of Alicante where we hope to see Alpine Accentor, Griffon Vultures, Crested Tit, Black wheatear, Hawfinch, Red-billed Chough, Woodlarck, etc. Later, our next stop will be the desert-like landscape of Monnegre. There, will look for Crested Lark, Rock Thrush, Trumpet finches, Rock Sparrows and butterflies.
Today we will be looking for early orchids and flowers such as Mirror Orchid, Sombre bee Orchid, Sawfly orchid, Giant Orchid or the endemic Ophrys dianica. On the evening we will head inland to wait until gets dark and the Genet comes to visit us. It is an exceptional opportunity to see this impressive nocturnal carnivorous.
Time to pack up our luggage and head back to the Valencia airport after this memorable Birding Valencia Alicante tour through the rich wildlife in the Mediterranean wetlands and steppes.
