During the morning, we will visit the Pego Marshes which are a significant wetland site located between Alicante and Valencia provinces. It has an area of 1290 hectares and it was declared Natural Park and Wetland of International Importance in 1994.

These coastal wetlands are important breeding areas for Purple, Night and Squacco Heron, Black-winged Stilt, Little Bittern, Collared Pratincole, Red-necked Nightjar, Whiskered tern,  Moustached warbler, Savi’s Warbler, Hoopoe, Little Ringed Plover and Great Reed warbler. In addition, Marsh Harriers and Ospreys can be watched all year round.

In winter large flocks of wildfowl visit the area as it is completely flooded. Furthermore, during that time of the year we will look for Bluethroats, Penduline Tits, Chiffchaffs, Booted Eagles and Ospreys. The last ones reintroduced since 2019.

Alicante mountains, gorgeous butterflies and orchids

During the afternoon we will head for the beautiful mountains of Alcoi to visit a Griffon Vulture colony which was reintroduced in 2001. There, we will look for Blue Rock Thrush and other interesting species. On the way and if the season is right, we can spend the afternoon looking for orchids and butterflies. Orchids include: Southern early-purple orchid (Orchis olbiensis), the endemic Ophrys lucentina, Sombre-bee orchid (Ophrys lupercalis), Pyramidal orchid (Anacamphys piramidalis), among many others. Besides, we will look for beautiful butterflies: Spanish Festoon, Provence Fritillary, Provence orange tip, etc. For more information, I would recommend you this article about butterflies in Valencia. Furthermore, during winter we could look for Alpine Accentors.
