Birdwatching and wildlife tours in Spain
In this wolfwatching tour in Spain we will explore during 5 days the rugged mountains of north-western Spain. We will be located in the isolated mountains of Sierra de La Culebra (Zamora province). For decades, the isolation and severe depopulation have allowed wolves to survive when they were relentlessly pursued in Spain. Wolves have made a strong comeback in Spain despite that they are still legally and illegally hunted in most areas in North Spain.
We must be patient and be still from the lookout points to have chances to watch them. During the last 5 years, we managed to see Iberian Wolves on all our trips. What’s more, the area also holds other interesting mammals and birds.
This tour is available from mid-August to early October and can be combined with the Cantabrian Mountains to see Wildcat, Brown bear, and alpine birds.
After 3 and a half hours of driving, we will get to la Sierra de la Culebra where we will stop at the first viewpoint before dusk to try to see our first Iberian Wolves that roam the area. After that, we will drive to our rural hotel to have a traditional Spanish dinner with local wine.
We will spend 3-4 hours from the watchpoints at dawn and at dusk when wolves are more active. During the rest of the day, we will be in search of birds and otters in the nearby rivers.
One day, we will visit the Villafáfila Lagoons to watch one of the greatest concentrations of Great Bustards in Europe, some days we have seen over 500! Depending on the time of the year, we will also see a large concentration of wintering Cranes, Greylags, wildfowl, waders, and raptors such as Black and Red kites, Hen and Montagu’s Harrier, and Short-eared Owl. Other birdlife includes Rock Sparrows, Lesser Kestrel, White Storks, and Little Owl among others.
We strongly think that promoting ecotourism in Sierra de la Culebra and Picos de Europa mountains will put in value the Iberian Wolves and therefore, it will make people see wolves with another eye. If we succeed, they will not be anymore the evil creatures that have to be killed.
This tour is available from September-December and March-June. It involves easy walks and we will probably spend at least 50% of our time scanning, stationary, from accessible viewpoints. We will provide chairs to make it more comfortable. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
